What video content will be trending in 2020?

As well as being the year of the pig, 2019 has been the year of the video.

How many have videos have you watched today? We’d probably guess a few, and you’re not alone. In 2019 on average people watched 84 minutes of videos online per day. And that’s set to grow, in 2021 that figure is expected to jump up to 100 minutes.

With the growing popularity of IGTV, IG Stories and Tik Tok (with 500 MILLION active users) and the way in which people consume media (at a VERY rapid rate), creating video is more important than ever before.

So, we want you and your company to be ahead of the game when it comes to video content creation in 2020.

Clothesline have created a list of what video content will be trending in the new year:

1.Long form is back baby! No sound? Vertical only? Under 10 seconds? This content is dying out. We’ve all heard repeatedly that the human attention span is shrinking and is now shorter than that of a goldfish* (blurgh, so depressing!) This has resulted in many marketers falling back on short-form videos in a bid to inspire greater engagement, but this looks set to change in 2020.

*A study disproved this fact a few years ago. Thank god!

There’s no denying that snackable content is easy to consume, especially on the go on your phone. But these videos fail to allow brands to form the emotional connection that makes them memorable to consumers.

The brands that will win in 2020 will not be those who just battle it out for a few seconds of someone’s attention, but those who also earn love and loyalty by deepening engagement with their audience for minutes at a time

2. People want to see you. Yes, you! If you’re the face of your company or the CEO of a brand or the spokesperson for a product your audience wants to see you. People want to get to know you and the product or business they’re spending their money on.

Now we know not everyone loves getting in front of the camera. Over at Clothesline, we definitely like to stick behind it. But in 2020 people expect to see the people who are the face behind the brand and companies that they’re going to spend their hard earned cash on. So, if you haven’t got your main person in front of the camera as yet for all of your video content, now is the time to make it happen.

3.Tik Tok type video content (Candy Content) Unless you’re under 20 you may not have spent much time Tik Tok. This will help you understand. Formerly known as musical.ly, it started out as a social media platform for creating, sharing and discovering short music videos, think Karaoke for the digital age. But has evolved into a platform for kids to create short videos- pranks, dancing, lip syncing, throwing cheese slices at stuff...you name it, they’re doing it. And doing it alot.

“The 1.5m Australians using the app every month open Tik Tok eight times a day, nearly three times as much as they open Instagram and more than four times as much as they open Snapchat.” said Mumbrella Author, David Krupp.

It’s the fastest growing platform in the world right now and it ain’t going away anytime soon. With over 500 million daily users expect to see this type of candy content to appear in more our every day video content in 2020.

4.Video formatting. Videos need to be created to meet the needs of each individual social media network. It’s no longer acceptable to have a portrait filmed video on a portrait format. Platform-specific content, like square videos for Facebook or vertical videos for Instagram Live enhance the viewer experience, stand out visually in feeds, and are more likely to enhance engagement numbers. So when you’re making videos in 2020, make sure they’re formatted correctly for the media channel they’re going to be distributed on. People ain’t going to watch your videos if it doesn’t fit the screen properly.

5. Next level visuals in content. Who doesn’t love passing the time flipping through the filters on Insta? Visual-forward platforms will continue to be trending in 2020. From entertainment to communication, we’re going all-in on the power of interactive imagery. Among the next generation of soon-to-be-adults, visual social media reigns supreme. Instagram, YouTube, Tik Tok and Snapchat are the most popular platforms where teens hang out. For adults, YouTube is the most-used platform, topping even Facebook. Visuals in content are going to get more interesting. Expect in 2020 to be able to create your own augmented reality (AR) filters and lenses for Snapchat and other similar platforms.
