Need to film OS but can't travel? No worries.

Traveling is still fairly restricted within Australia and filming OS is a total no go, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make shoots happen. This week Clothesline had shoots in India, Israel, Sydney and Canberra. All of them were directed and produced remotely from our office in Melbourne, Australia by Clothesline Content.

Here are some tips on remote shooting to get you started:

1. Planning. It’s super important when you’re working across multiple countries with different crews that you have your creative briefs, scripts and call sheets locked down before you begin. So that if you are working with a new Producer or Director remotely, they have very clear instructions of what you need them to shoot.

2. Decide on your locations and figure out the time zone difference. This will impact your local and international shooting teams, shooting times and deadlines. Time zones are important to consider when you’re producing remotely. Do you want to be producing a shoot via Zoom at 3am? Probably not. So make sure you think through time differences to make sure it works for everyone.

3. Reach out to your contacts to help secure your crew. We like to use fixers and crew members within our network to help set things up. This way we know and trust their ability to deliver the content that we are after. Different countries have different shooting formats, frame rates, processes and terminology - stuff can get lost in translation, so if you have a person on the ground to help coordinate it really helps!

4. Decide on your delivery method before you shoot. This will impact how, and what settings you decide to film with. Are you going to download the files? If they’re massive this will take a long time depending on your internet speed. Or are you going to get a hard drive sent to you via post? This could take a while, depending on where it’s coming from and any Covid-19 time delays. All these things need to be considered.
